Know the Darkside: A Therapist’s Guide to the Subversive Challenges We Face in this Digital Landscape

1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

A therapist addressing sexual compulsion in the modern digital environment must be familiar and conversant within a broad range of online behaviors and terms to effectively identify and prescribe a course of corrective treatment for their patients.

In this brief presentation we will approach the subject from an Information Science approach, presenting a high level ontology that can serve as a “Knowledge Graph,” or map, of this extensive landscape. Armed with this knowledge, therapists can more confidently connect with their clients armed with a vocabulary and working knowledge of current and emerging digital interactions affecting their client’s well-being.

Topics covered will span hardware (smart phones, augmented/virtual reality, etc.) to software (apps, services, and processes) to semantics (industry jargon, terminology, and specialized knowledge).

Learning Objectives:

  1. Introduce the concept of a Knowledge Graph that can serve a therapist as a working mental model of information to integrate and acquire information regarding the broad environment of subversive online behavior negatively impacting their clients
  2. Understand basic modern hardware and software technology interaction concepts/principles that facilitate negative online behavior.
  3. Acquire an expanded lexicon that addresses up to date jargon, terminology, and behaviors to be more conversant in therapeutic communication.
